Erik Bendix has been teaching folk dance in Europe and the U.S. since 1972. He has studied and taught Macedonian, Bulgarian, Armenian, Yiddish (or klezmer), Romanian, Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, Albanian, Serbian, Greek, Turkish, Hungarian, and Croatian folk dances, as well as traditional Mevlevi dervish whirling dances and Appalachian clogging. Erik co-founded the Volkstanz International (VTI) workshops in Switzerland in the late 1970s; and the Mountain Playshop in Asheville, NC, in 1984. VTI is now a major folkdance organization in Europe, running tours to the Balkans, several Balkan and klezmer music camps a year, plus week-long and weekend folkdance workshops. Ask him about the Playshop! Erik has taught nearly 40 weekend dance workshops, as well as 15 week-long workshops. Other movement arts have drawn his attention: Kathak, Loshan Gung,Tuan Chin and Pa Kua , and Tai Chi Chuan. It is no surprise, then, that his workaday profession is teaching a type of movement therapy; he is an AmSAT-certified teacher of the Alexander Technique and a certified practitioner of Body-Mind Centering. He currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina. | |
