Joe Graziosi

Yes, his last name’s Italian – but his mother was from Eastern Thrace! Joseph Kaloyanides Graziosi grew up in the very active Greek-American community of greater Boston, so he was exposed to Greek music and dance early on. In addition, he began his formal study and documentation of traditional Greek dance while still in college. (B.A., 1976, History, Brandeis.) During a semester-abroad program in Athens Joe was fortunate enough to work with noted folklorist Ted Petrides, and never looked back. Ever since then he has done independent research in folk music and dance in Greece proper, in the formerly Greek areas of the Anatolian Peninsula, and in the Greek-American communities in New England and New York. Joe spent more than 15 years in the New York City area, where he and the late Paul Ginis founded the Greek American Folklore Society. He taught there throughout the 1980s, and advised and performed with several local groups. For 30 years he has also served as advisor and judge for annual folkdance festivals held under the auspices of various Greek Orthodox dioceses. When Joe moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1996 for a few years, he went academic, serving as a guest lecturer on Greek dance and music for the ethnomusicology departments of UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. Never idle (or boring), when he moved back east (to Cape Cod), he and Ahmet Lüleci founded the annual World Music & Dance Camp. Joe has taught traditional Greek folk and urban dances at workshops, seminars, and dance camps throughout the U.S. (not just the lower 48, either) and Canada. He has introduced people to Greek dances in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Brazil, Taiwan, and Japan. As you might expect, Joe has compiled a massive library of scholarly research and a comprehensive video library and musical archive. (He has also produced anthology CDs using hard-to-find recorded sources – ask him.) MVFD is happy to offer you the chance to learn from an expert with such impressive experience
