Come learn "dances so old, they're new!"

with two instructors new to Dayton. They are going to help us revive some good dances that have transitioned out of our everyday repertoire. We will also emphasize "older" dances during the dance parties. There should be dancing for everyones tastes.

Ron Houston began folk dancing in 1955 with pioneer folk dance leaders George Lowrey and Roy McCutchan. Other early dance and recreation influences included Jane Farwell and Mary Ann Herman's Maine Folk Dance Camp. Ron began teaching in 1969 and helped found in 1971 and conduct for some 20 years the Festival Folklórico Internacional in Mexico. For 25 years he conducted the Friday-night folk dance sessions at the University of Texas. Ron studied dance formally in Poland, earned the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) teaching certificate, and studied informally in many other European countries and in Mexico. He went on to teach workshops around the US and abroad. In 1987, pioneer folk dancers asked him to create an archive, and he founded the Society of Folk Dance Historians (SFDH), publishing the widely respected annual series "Folk Dance Problem Solver" (each issue presenting the history and descriptions of approximately 40 folk dances), the quarterly "Report to Members", and the "Folk Dance Phone Book and Group Directory" (an alphabetical, classified, and geographical directory of folk dancers, groups, teachers, musicians, vendors, etc.). The Society Archive has now grown to hundreds of thousands of descriptions, tens of thousands of phonograph recordings, and thousands of books and magazines. In 2003, he received "Recognition" from Nelda Drury's San Antonio Folk Dance Festival, and in 2007, the National Folk Organization (NFO) awarded him their "Preserving Our Legacy" award. Alix Cordray is an active dance instructor in Oslo, Norway. She currently teaches three recreational groups and numerous workshops. Two of the groups, Hordaringen and Springar'n, perform regularly and have visited the US. Alix grew up in international (especially Balkan) folk dancing in the San Francisco Bay Area. She danced in the Westwind International Folk Ensemble from 1966-1975 and was artistic director 1981-1982. She also taught at the Mandala in San Francisco from its inception in 1970 until 1975 and again 1979-1981. She moved to Norway in 1975, where she has gradually focused more and more on Norwegian dance. Starting in 1977, she has toured the US teaching Norwegian dance many times. Alix has taught at many camps including Stockton Folk Dance Camp, Pinewoods, Scandia Mendocino, Norsk Folkedans Stemne (Seattle), Swansea (in Wales), Elverum (in Norway, taught international there every year for more than 10 years). In addition to recreational folk dance, Alix is a trained dancer, including extensive training in modern dance (Graham technique), a Master of Arts degree in dance from Mills College in Oakland, Ca., Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) teacher certification, and university work in Norwegian dance in Norway. To top it all off, Alix plays Norwegian folk music on a two row accoridon, zither, and double bass.

And, Yes, Alix is Eddie Cordray's oldest sister.
